What titles and certificates really show

A title is a receipt for a performance. Useful, but narrower than most buyers assume.

What a title is

Sport organizations such as those behind IGP, formerly Schutzhund, award titles when a dog passes a defined test under judges. The title proves the dog reached a standard on that day, in that format. It is evidence, and often good evidence.

What a title leaves out

  • How the dog behaves in a kitchen, a car or a crowd.
  • Whether it lives well with children or other pets.
  • How it responds to a handler who is not the one who trained it.
  • Its health, which needs its own records.

Questions to ask about any paper

  1. Who issued it, and what exactly was tested?
  2. When was it earned, and has the dog been tested since?
  3. Can I see the original, not a photo of a photo?
  4. How does the dog behave outside the test setting?

Police-style and security certificates

Some programs describe police-style or security certification. The same logic applies: find out who certified, against what standard, and how recently.

Next, learn how to read the records behind the paper in reading training records.

Quick answers

Does every good dog have a title?

No. Some excellent dogs have none, and some titled dogs are poor fits. Use the paper as one input.

Are sport titles useful for personal protection?

They show control and drive under test conditions. Ask how that carries over to everyday life.
